Easter Treats, Russian Style

Yes, I'm a bad blogger and it's taken me way too long to share these photos with you.  However, I figured it's better to share late than not at all, so here goes...

This is a special Russian Easter bread called Kulich.  My dad picked it up at Moscow Deli in Costa Mesa when he was visiting us the week before Easter.  It's very similar to our Italian panettone, but with icing on top.

This is Paskha, a sweet dish made of farmer's cheese.  It's traditionally eaten with Kulich.  I was able to get it at Moscow Deli before we left for Northern California.

We enjoyed both the Kulich and the Paskha the day after Easter, on a picnic in St. Helena at Napa Valley Olive Oil Company.  They have a lovely Italian market, where we usually get salami and cheese.  The Kulich and Paskha made a great dessert for our picnic lunch.  Here you can see the inside -- it really does look just like panettone.

  1. So you switched to Kyrgyzstan?!! WOW how exciting:) Glad you aren't going to hold out for Kaz! Would love to hear all the details about your process and what you are expecting as far as age of child and timeline. We actually talked to Kate at Nightlight right after Kyrg opened but decided we were to far into the Ukraine process to switch, but since Peyton's mother is from Kyrg we are hoping maybe for #3 we can go there! We'll let you pave the way and smooth out all the wrinkles for us! LOL Anyway so happy for you and I know you must be super excited to actually by doing something now instead of waiting on a country to never open!:(

    1. Yeah, we switched pretty much as soon as they opened -- they opened on a Friday, and we officially switched on a Monday. We'd been talking about it as a possible "back up plan" for quite a while, though -- basically as long as Kyrgyzstan has been talking about opening. Our social worker looked at it as "one of the two will open" and encouraged us not to finalize the home study until one of the two did open.

At this point, our dossier is missing one document, which I hope to have in my hot little hands tomorrow (pray, pray, pray).

We are still asking for two siblings under age 6, with the younger of the two being under age 2, with mild and/or correctable needs. Estimated referral time is within 3 months of receipt of dossier.

I can't wait to follow your progress as well -- both in Ukraine and eventually Kyrgyzstan. :)
